Chancellor Angela Merkel, Germany’s political leader, is an historic figure. She is the first head of her country to have grown up in the communist East, according to a German Translation service. She holds the record for being the first female chancellor and the youngest one. After her first four years in office, during which her conservative Christian Democratic Union party’s efforts were stifled by liberal coalitions, she gained a new mandate by teaming up with conservative coalition partners. As the leader of Europe’s powerhouse, Chancellor Angela Merkel sits in a position of prominence among world leaders.

The way she was raised has had a big impact on the way she leads the country. Brandenburg was her childhood home, where she was raised by her father, a protestant minister. Chancellor Angela Merkel learned how to work the system in East Germany, which probably prepared her well for work in politics.

Shortly after entering politics, Chancellor Angela Merkel was made a cabinet minister by Helmut Kohl. Chancellor Angela Merkel experienced a great deal of sexism in Kohl’s government, but was successful nevertheless. An Arabic to English Translation team revealed that the chancellor’s party received millions in illegal funds. The millions were funneled to the party from two different sources. The first was from the sale of German tanks to Saudia Arabia for kickbacks, and the second was as a result of a fraud deal with former French President Francois Mitterand. According to a prominent French translator, over 300 million DM in illegal funds were funneled to bank accounts in the canton of Geneva. Kohl became mired in the scandal but Chancellor Angela Merkel emerged unscathed.

Even as politicans begin to think about new stimulus, Merkel’s conservatives have warned against making further tax breaks for companies while the FDP is insisting on a new and immediate round of cuts.

While more negative reports come out about Merkel, she has decided to go into hiding and stop making public appearances. However, even as she is not making media appearances, there are spokespeople for the Chancellor who are speaking and indicating that Merkel is pleased wit her new coalition. When Christoph Steegmans was asked about how the Chancellor views her new coalition, he indicated, “The chancellor views the coalition’s performance as good.”
